Democrats of the Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce just released a new report detailing chemicals used in the toxic gas exploration process known as Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking or fracing). Fracking is a technique used to extract natural gas from oil shale beneath the earths surface. Communities are increasingly concerned about fracking polluting public water systems and the environment, when the chemicals leak into aquifers, rivers, streams and the atmosphere.
While the oil/gas industry has denied any problem, there is mounting evidence that public water systems and private wells are being polluted in areas around the drilling sites. In states such as Pennsylvania, politicians have welcomed Big Oil in with open arms, and thousands of gas extraction wells are expected to be drilled this year. Presently, the natural gas industry does not have to disclose the chemicals used, but scientists have identified known carcinogens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. The chemicals can most often leak in to the water system in several ways:
Derrick – The natural gas process involves drilling 5,000 feet or more down and a comparable distance horizontally. The majority of the drilling liquid remains in the ground and is not biodegradable.
Well Casing – If the well casing that penetrates through the aquifer is not well sealed, chemicals can leak in to the aquifer.
Fractured Shale – To release the gas from underground, millions of gallons of water, sand and proprietary chemicals are injected, under high pressure, into the well. The pressure fractures the shale and props open fissures that enable natural gas to flow more freely out of the well. These fissures may allow the chemicals to enter the water system. In addition, recent reports suggest that radiation in the ground is contaminating the fracking fluid. This radiation has been showing up in drinking water. Surface Contamination – The gas comes up wet in produced water and has to be separated from the wastewater on the surface. Only 30-50% of the water is typically recovered from a well. This wastewater can be highly toxic. Holding ponds, and handling mishaps can release this toxic brew into the environment. For some examples, see the video below about residents in Pennsylvania and the impact of fracking on their water systems. Surface evaporation of VOCs coming into contact with diesel exhaust from trucks and generators at the well site, can produce ground level ozone. Ozone plumes can travel up to 250 miles.
Horizontal fracking uses up to 300 tons of a mixture of 750 chemicals, many of them proprietary, and millions of gallons of water per frack. This water then becomes contaminated and must be cleaned and disposed of. To date, the oil/gas industry has been secretive about what chemicals are used, and has lobbied Congress for a variety of protections. Much of the contaminated water is taken to water treatment plants that are not designed to process the chemicals and radiation found in fracking fluids.
In 2005, the Bush/ Cheney Energy Bill exempted natural gas drilling from the Safe Drinking Water Act. It exempts companies from disclosing the chemicals used during hydraulic fracturing. Essentially, the provision took the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) off the job. It is now commonly referred to as the Halliburton Loophole.
The FRAC Act (Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemical Act) is a House bill intended to repeal the Halliburton Loophole and to require the natural gas industry to disclose the chemicals they use.
The Safe Drinking Water Act was passed by Congress, in 1974, to ensure clean drinking water free from both natural and man-made contaminates. Remember the days when rivers were so polluted with toxic industrial waste that they would ignite into flame?

Today Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman, Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Edward J. Markey, and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette released a new report that summarizes the types, volumes, and chemical contents of the hydraulic fracturing products used by the 14 leading oil and gas service companies. The report contains the first comprehensive national inventory of chemicals used by hydraulic fracturing companies during the drilling process.
“Hydraulic fracturing has helped to expand natural gas production in the United States, but we must ensure that these new resources don’t come at the expense of public health,” said Rep. Waxman. “This report shows that these companies are injecting millions of gallons of products that contain potentially hazardous chemicals, including known carcinogens. I urge EPA and DOE to make certain that we have strong protections in place to prevent these chemicals from entering drinking water supplies.”
“With our river ways and drinking water at stake, it’s an absolute necessity that the American public knows what is in these fracking chemicals,” said Rep. Markey. “This report is the most comprehensive look yet at the composition of the chemicals used in the fracking process, and should help the industry, the government, and the American public push for a safer way to extract natural gas.”
During the last Congress, the Committee launched an investigation into the practice of hydraulic fracturing in the United States, asking the leading oil and gas service companies to disclose information on the products used in this process between 2005 and 2009.
The Democratic Committee staff analyzed the data provided by the companies about their practices, finding that:
- The 14 leading oil and gas service companies used more than 780 million gallons of hydraulic fracturing products, not including water added at the well site. Overall, the companies used more than 2,500 hydraulic fracturing products containing 750 different chemicals and other components.
- The components used in the hydraulic fracturing products ranged from generally harmless and common substances, such as salt and citric acid, to extremely toxic substances, such as benzene and lead. Some companies even used instant coffee and walnut hulls in their fracturing fluids.
- Between 2005 and 2009, the oil and gas service companies used hydraulic fracturing products containing 29 chemicals that are known or possible human carcinogens, regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) for their risks to human health, or listed as hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act.
- The BTEX compounds – benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene – are SDWA contaminants and hazardous air pollutants. Benzene also is a known human carcinogen. The hydraulic fracturing companies injected 11.4 million gallons of products containing at least one BTEX chemical over the five-year period.
- Methanol, which was used in 342 hydraulic fracturing products, was the most widely used chemical between 2005 and 2009. The substance is a hazardous air pollutant and is on the candidate list for potential regulation under SDWA. Isopropyl alcohol, 2-butoxyethanol, and ethylene glycol were the other most widely used chemicals.
- Many of the hydraulic fracturing fluids contain chemical components that are listed as “proprietary” or “trade secret.” The companies used 94 million gallons of 279 products that contained at least one chemical or component that the manufacturers deemed proprietary or a trade secret. In many instances, the oil and gas service companies were unable to identify these “proprietary” chemicals, suggesting that the companies are injecting fluids containing chemicals that they themselves cannot identify.
How Fracking Can Effect Your Community And What You Can Do About It
Once a communities water system is made toxic, property values plummet. Homeowners end up with homes that can’t be sold at anywhere near their original value. They are forced to live in their un-sellable homes and continue to be exposed to the toxic environment. Fracking can compromise public health and environmental quality. The map below from the Gasland project shows where oil shale gas drilling areas are most intensive, in red.

The term “play” is used in the oil and gas industry to refer to a geographic area which has been targeted for exploration due to: favorable geoseismic survey results; well logs; or production results from a new or “wildcat well” in the area. An area comes into play when it is generally recognized that there is a valuable quantity of oil or gas to be found. Oil and gas companies will send out professional “land men” who research property records at the local courthouses and after having located landowners who own the mineral rights in the play area, will offer them an oil and gas lease deal. Competition for acreage usually increases based on how hot the play is in terms of production from discovery wells in the area. The more oil and gas there is to be had, the higher the lease payments per acre are.
And money talks. Homeowners and towns can be attracted to the offer of money for exploitation of the shale. The heavy costs paid are only realized after the deal is signed – costs to the environment, increased industrial traffic through the community, attraction of outsider oil/gas workforce that can stress local community wellbeing, and of course – environmental degradation, and risk to public water systems.
Bryan Walsh, one of my favorite environmental reporters, just published this evenhanded video that looks at some specific examples of toxic fracking related events in Pennsylvania, the heart of east coast gas extraction. While business leaders in the community enjoy the increased hotel and travel related economics, the devastating impact on homeowners and communities can be tragic.
As the video shows, there is a growing conflict between public health interests and business interests. Anytime oil/gas is involved, big money is at stake. Big Oil spends tens of millions of dollars lobbying politicians to favor their business, often at the expense of public health and the environment. Local businesses welcome all the truckers, traffic and drilling personnel because it means increased commerce. But at what cost?
Communities are fighting back. Do your homework and get to know about fracking. The articles below in Recommended Reading are a good start, and rent the HBO movie documentary Gasland. You will get a good background on how communities across the US are being effected. If you think your community is being impacted by fracking, the Gasland producers have setup a good website to learn more and with tips on how to Take Action, including links to elected officials, info on local organizations, and email action alerts. Remember – oil companies are funneling big money into politicians coffers to influence public policy. It will take your steady, informed, organized community voice to counter big oil special interests.

It highlights one of the most effective ways for grass-roots movements to speak truth to power. He also features Tina Rosenberg’s new book Join the Club: How Peer Pressure Can Transform the World. Kristoff offers examples of the techniques in action, including: how kids took on Big Tobacco and reduced teen smoking in Florida; the Egyptian revolution; Serbia, etc.
I just added this excellent video by Josh Fox, calling out NY Governor Cuomo on fracking. It is an excellent review of secret memos leaked from the gas industry, detailing how fracking system failures pollute our water resources. Rolling Stone Magazine online has a good article calling the Governor out on fracking.
And finally, support politicians that are committed to a strong Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Trend Is Our Friend
Fossil fuels are becoming more expensive and extraction more toxic. The easy stuff has already been extracted over the decades. What remains poses greater and greater risk to public health and the environment. Fossil fuels are our past. Renewable energy is our future. Renewables are becoming cheaper and cheaper and are much cleaner to produce. Let’s not compromise our future trying to ring every last drop of oil and gas out of the ground. Support politicians that understand the pressing need to rapidly transition to renewable energy and invest in research and development, education, and regulation.

Gasland was debunked and the movie The Promised Land had to be re-shot after the EPA came out with over 5 separate reports where they couldn’t find any, not even a single case where fracking caused any noticeable damaged to an aquifer.
I love how people just run around the net spewing lies about lighting your water on fire or dangerous chemicals used in the fracking process. They use a little soap, a little propylene glycol (which we consume in food products on a daily basis), a little bit of light acids to control the PH and some sand/aluminum shot/ceramics and the media calls them DANGEROUS CHEMICALS.
These are all things we eat, drink and bath in on a regular basis. Not only that but on the scale in which we are talking you intake 1000X more of these chemicals just by eating fast food and junk food snacks than you would from a spill or leakage into an aquifer.
What really gets me is that there are a lot of liberal mineral owners who talk out two sides of their mouths. One side says “fracking and big oil are bad” while the other side says “yes, I will take that lease and your money.”

Would you provide a link to the source of the “debunk” – most of the rebuttal to Gasland has been done by petroleum industry front groups, such as the American Petroleum Institute and American Natural Gas, and Gasland has debunked the rebuttals. But let us know your source and we can look at it.
The fact that most of the people on here believe the scaling of this image and that the frac fluid actually propagates up into the water table shows the lack of hydraulic fracturing knowledge of most anti-fracking people. This is an obvious scare tactic if you know anything about how hydraulic fracturing works. ABC is dead on with his comment. The average water table depth is right around 400 feet and the average gas/oil well depth is around 6,000 feet. You are fracking pretty good if you get your cracks to propagate 100 feet from your casing. For those of you that can’t do math (which seems like the vast majority of people on here since you believe the fluid goes from the well into the water) that’s a 5,600 foot gap that the fracking fluid would have to travel to get into the water table. Please explain to me then how this fluid travels up against gravity, on its own, through multiple layers of rock, and into the water table. Even if you could propagate a crack this unexplained distance of 5600 feet, companies wouldn’t do it because it’s a total waste of time and money to frac beyond your pay zone.
Even if that doesn’t convince you think of what happens if you blew up a balloon. What does the air do when you release the opening of the balloon? It exits the balloon into the area around you because of differences in pressure (freshman level engineering and physics). The same principle applies with a well. Basically everything wants to be at equilibrium and so once the well is open to allow flow, anything in the ground will want to go into the casing and up the well because of the high pressures below ground.
For those of you that watched that Gasland movie or whatever it is and now consider yourself a frack expert I have some facts for you. There was a study done around 1970’s, I believe 1976, showing high and dangerous amounts of methane in the Marcellus shale (this was before the time of tracking) and the director of the film pulled this info because he found it “irrelevant” or something like that. The list goes on and on of all the things wrong with this film.
If you want to attack any part of the oil well services, then maybe you should look into the casing and cementing stages of a well and not fracturing because once you do your research, or in my case actually work in the oil field, then you will learn that the point of casing and cementing is to keep things inside the well. What I mean by this is that fracturing plays no part in if fluid gets into the well. Everything depends on the cement job and casing.
Bob, Fracking fails in a number of ways. Most of the contamination seems to happen at surface, during development of the well, when accidents are most likely to happen. But that can be misleading. Over time, as you mention, cement and casings can fail, and there is some evidence that over generations, the toxins deep down can make there way to the surface. Bottom line is fossil fuel extraction is getting increasingly toxic and expensive. We can do better and should.

As they say: A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. While frac fluid may or may not contain hydrocarbons like xylene and toluene initially, it definitely will after it comes out of the ground (because they pick them up from subsurface deposits). Yes, these are known carcinogens but this isn’t your only exposure to them on a day to day basis. Every fill up your car with gasoline? Every time you do you are exposed to these ‘aromatic’ hydrocarbons. Ever had your car leak oil, or get oil on your hands? You have just been exposed to the same chemicals.
Many people like to play the activist and pretend as if hydro-fracking is a devil created by corporate oil. Every time you use electricity, heat your home or fill up your car YOU are the driving force behind these technologies.
Hydro-fracking is a relatively new technology that is still in its infancy. Yes, there will be mistakes and contamination along the way. This is the price we pay for the energy we use. Just because you didn’t have to personally experience the growing pains that conventional oil, nuclear and other energy sources encountered doesn’t mean they weren’t there. As this technology develops it will become cleaner and more controlled.
If you are in any way in favor of ‘greener’ energy then you should support technologies such as fracking. We will need to continue to replace gas and coal with cleaner fuels until infrastructure for more renewable resources is available. As the problems and contamination points of hydro-fracturing are discovered, they are better equipped to prevent them and manage them in the small chance that they do happen. Support responsible clean energy. Support responsible fracking.
Fun fact Jay: A good estimate of the profit that a company makes on its gasoline is between 8% and 9%. To put this into perspective the government taking 13% is not out of the ordinary. Before you talk about the fuel industry “passing (profit) costs on to society”, maybe you should consider what the government is taking and passing on to you
While tracking is by no means a “good” process, it is evidently necessary. The fact is that EVERYBODY uses natural gas. If you don’t heat your home with natural gas, then every single factory-made object in your possession was made involving natural gas in some way, somewhere along the production line. Unless you live off the grid, there are no exceptions. Right now much of the natural gas being consumed in the US was “fracked” in other countries, some developing. Who are we to say “I want my natural gas but I don’t want to frack MY land, I want to frack somebody else’s!” Of all the countries with known natural gas reserves, the US has some of the strongest environmental government agencies, as well as organizations that protect the environment. Yes, fracking is a high-risk operation but if anyone has the means to do it safely (albeit there is money that needs to be invested in further research to improve the process), it is the US. And it is frustrating that time and resources continue to be wasted with oil companies and environmental groups fighting each other, and all of the propaganda. Instead, compromises need to be made and research needs to be done. Un-biased information needs to be released and “educational figures” need to be made by real scientists. The diagram in this article is disgustingly inaccurate. Not to mention, there is no proof that fracking was at fault for homeowners being able to light their tap water on fire. Residential wells are quite often drilled into shale, which naturally contains different types of gas from the decay of organic matter that was deposited along with the silt and clay millions of years ago. Methane naturally forms, and residential drinking-water wells are often drilled into rock with pockets of methane. None of those homeowners decided to hold a match to their tap water just to “see what would happen” BEFORE fracking began, there has likely always been methane coming from their well.

Fracking does not reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to escape of methane during the process.
Waste water is produced in vast quantities and we don’t have the facilities to deal with it. In Europe they plan to send this water to public waste water treatment plants which were never designed for the additives in fracking fluids.
For these reasons we will fight tooth and nail to keep fracking out of our countries; it is not the solution to a growing climate problem.
If fracking is so “on the up and up” then why are the employees who do this not told about locations until they are on the road and almost there? I have a friend who has two sons that work for a fracking company and they are not told where they are going until the last minute while they are in the trucks. These people are devious and greedy and they don’t care who they hurt!!!

I realize I’m late on this article, but I wanted to do some research on the subject and I see the same problems, not solutions, over and over again.
Please make it clear to me how you will create “green energy” such as solar panels and wind farms without the use of oil/natural gas. Not only are they created from petroleum and petroleum by-products, those wind farms aren’t going to be erected without some large trucks and cranes. And how will you get those windmills out there?
It is unfortunate, but we have become reliant on the oil and gas industry. I would love to support an environmental agency that has solutions, not more problems. An electric care requires components, and how are these components manufactured? Magic?
The only solution I have seen is to ditch ALL industry and go back to sawing logs and building homes from mud and sticks. Community living, no electricity and no means of transportation aside from animals and our own two feet. That is not going to happen anytime soon. Maybe in a post apocalyptic era.
It also sounds to me like it is the CEMENTING that fails, not the fracturing process. Is it just more fun to say fracking? Buzzword perhaps? Those always appeals to the general public. I am by no means saying that fracking is safe, nor that the methods to retrieve natural gas are fool proof. I would just like answers so I can support a group with a genuinely useful cause.

Extraction of energy uses other energies. Wood burned to make steam to mine coal, oil burned to mine coal, natural gas burned to make electricity to power plants that make solar panels and wind turbines. Wind turbines that generate electricity to power bio-fuels production, bio-fuels burned to transport gasoline, etc. That has been going on for hundreds of years.
I work with a number of energy companies and environmental agencies, and there are plenty of solutions. And as is natural with engineering any solution, it starts with a good understanding of the problem. That’s why we talk about the problems and solutions together. If you look at any energy transition, for example energy for lighting – whale oil to coal gas, to natural gas, to electricity – transitions take about 30 years. In our nanosecond culture, that feels like a long time. But when you are switching infrastructure over to the new technology, it takes a lot of time to build out the new ways.
What can speed the transition to cleaner renewables is an honest accounting of the costs. We need carbon pricing to show the true cost of coal and oil and natural gas, and then that true cost will allow a truly free market to migrate to the lower cost alternatives – wind, solar, etc. Right now, the costs of carbon based fuels are passed on the public, while the profits are retained by the fossil fuel industry. That needs to stop. The fossil fuel industry needs to live in a free market with an honest accounting.
Looking at the trends, we can see that fossil fuels days are numbered, as the price rises inexorably. All the easy oil is gone. Extraction depends on increasingly expensive technology, to drill deeper, and squeeze more from less.
And while fossil fuel prices are increasing, renewable prices are falling exponentially. For example, solar is now displacing diesel for power generation in India. Wind power wholesale price is just a few cents per kWh. This “grid parity” is unfolding all over the world and will only further speed the transition to renewables.
Regarding fracking, cement failure is a major issue, but it is an “all of the above” kind of thing. Different parts of the complex process each have vulnerabilities, some in short term, some in the long term. Starting with a nontoxic fracking fluid would at least ensure, regadless of failure mode, it would reduce risk to community water supplies.
